I just bought it, the article is no more than a paragraph, and reads as such:
"At the drive-in alumni Omar Rodriguez and Cedric Bixler are currently holed up in an abandoned house outside Los Angeles, recording the Mars Volta's debut album with producer Rick Rubin. 'When we went into the house for the first night, we all slept in the same room, because we were kind of scared," admits guitarist Rodriguez. 'When it's 3 in the morning and you're feeling paranoid, it's hard to decipher if someone's in the house or outside.' Rodriguez says the house is the perfect environment for the group's audio novella about a character named Serpintax's journey through life and death. 'It's taken from true-life experiences of a good friend of ours who passed away, and our experiences with him,' he says. 'It's also alot of fiction, fairy-tale and sci-fi; it just deals with a lot of his trauma and maybe where he went after he took his life.' But don't expect a book on tape: With Rodriguez's arsenal of 100-plus effects pedals and a collective set influences ranging from salsa to Led Zeppelin, the Mars Volta's music should be as captivating as their lyrics. 'Had it not been for Black Flag, I would have been a salsa player,' Rodriguez says. 'In a way, I could say we're a rock 'n' roll band who wants to be a salsa band.'"
Sounds interesting--hell of a concept. I can't wait to hear Cedric telling a fucking fairy-tale. (I'm willing to be it will have the four horsemen of apocalypse holding puppet strings of a robot who's chopping down trees.)
I'm assuming this is the same person Embroglio and Concertina make reference to.

I think Napoleon Solo is about different people. I remember reading somewhere (I couldn't tell you where) that it was about two of Cedric's friends who died in a car crash--they were in a band called The Fall of Deaf Ears, I believe. "As Sparta fashions a bright future, Austin indie label maverick Ben Dickey of Post-Parlo Records has delved into ATDI's past, digging up the Fall on Deaf Ears, an El Paso supergroup that included Bixler and current Rhythm of Black Lines member Clint Newsom, as well as Laura Beard and Sarah Reiser, who were killed in a car accident mere months after the group broke up.
