Pearl Jam - favorite band ever so i gotta put them first...their 30 song sets are amazing... i've heard good things about 311's long sets as well (i.e. playing entire albums)
John Butler Trio - amazing band and i love jam bands alot...they play about 10 song set which total around 3 hours worth of music...improvising at its best...
Fugazi - there's nothing that can describe their live sets...they had a great opening act a while ago...guitar and drum band that played a 30 minute solo then left...it was amazing...fugazi's backup players created their own band called French Toast, whom i saw with trail of dead at the 930 club...pretty damn good...
Zebrahead - fun band, it's great to see them live...they have a request hour where they play 15 seconds of covers...
Stone Temple Pilots - Saw them a dozen times...amazing live and i have mr. weilands towel and gatorade in my room somewhere
Princes Of Babylon - play an awesome show of dub-hiphop
G-Love is amazing live...it's great to see someone who can rap and play acoustic guitar at the same time
Kelly Bell Band - great blues experience...check them out...
Laughing Colors - plays an awesome show, especially with KBB
Rollins Band - for some straight out hard rock...
this was a while ago, but Days of the New played a great show...
The Wallflowers - suck a titmouse if you hate them, they play a fuckin awesome show (im not even a big fan and i can say that)...i saw them in myrtle beach with John Mayer way before he got big (he played with just a bassist) and the Wallflowers played 2 hours worth of their music, then said fuck this and played another hour long set of strictly covers...their bassist sang Blurr's Song 2 and then they jammed out abunch of Who covers and more...
finally, DJ Tiesto has an awesome live performance...great to dance to

so what accounts for a good live band? and what accounts for a bad one? A good live band = a band that puts on a spectacular show. A bad live band = the opposite (crappy show).

It all boils down to the personal experience and emotions
we see some people like some bands live while others dont
it could also be circumstances that may not be the band directly that ruin the performance- audio, acoustics, location, roudy watchers, or the band ppl may be sick...it involves a lot i guess...
