there's something erie about seeing images of that saddam statue getting torn down. not quite as joyous as it was when communism fell. i can't decide, i really can't.

I haven't seen it, only heard about it (I've been listening to NPR all day).

That statue of Saddam made me think of the Walt Disney statue with Mickey Mouse...theyre both pointing and stuff...
They should have let the citizens tear it down if they wanted to...like the Berlin wall...

I kept thinking, oh crap its gonna fall on somebody. Me too, and yes Anton, it is very unsettling. There's just something about it that's weird, almost like foreshadowing to something later...something really bad.

The whole thing seemed a tad unreal to me, until I called a friend for a chat and she asked me to call back later. She'd just been told her son had been killed in Basra. The joyous tearing down of the statue didn't make anyone want to celebrate in my house.

it's a nice, symbolic thing to tear down a statue of a dictator.. it reminds me of the Stalin statue in Budapest getting bashed in 1956 (you didn't know about that revolution, did you? USA was too busy defending its economic interests - in Panama - to bother the liberty of people elsewhere back then.. just like today).
however I get a feeling that the rest of the war, and the post-war situation, won't be a likewise triumphant orgie..
