it helps song structure as well. maybe this is why your songs suck so godamn much nave!! ouch thats gotta hurt! yeah structure wise too, you just listen to and play things, and then try to fit them into your own songs.

for bass there isnt much point ive seen except playing les claypool or flea. but for guitar, playing other peoples songs helps a LOT. i learned tons from them. my bass teacher shows me some billy shean stuff... i learn alot more from that, than slapping around like a little bitch

Remember in the Shining where Jack goes insane and attempts to murder his faimily? And that famous line, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"? Same with guitar. It's fun as hell to just play your own shit and jam, but that's work since that's about developing your technique and your sound. Learning other people's stuff is the playing, without it you just might lose your mind and murder your family with an axe.
